A Big Brain Behind Artificial Intelligence, Wins Turing Award!

Here at intellichat we like to keep our finger on then AI pulse and we were pleased to hear that Judea Pearl, a longtime UCLA professor whose work on artificial intelligence laid the foundation for such inventions as the iPhone’s Siri speech recognition technology and Google’s driverless cars, has been named the 2011 ACM Turing Award winner!

The annual Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) A.M. Turing Award, sometimes called the “Nobel Prize in Computing,” recognizes Pearl for his advances in probabilistic and causal reasoning. His work has enabled creation of thinking machines that can cope with uncertainty, making decisions even when answers aren’t black or white.

Who knows, someday intellichat might be celebrating after a Turing award win ;)

A New Breed of IE

Users of Internet Explorer tend to be very dedicated, despite the fact that they have seen strong competition from Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox to mention a few. However, IE supporters are finally being given the attention they deserve with Microsoft’s new force-update scheme. This means that if you are running IE 7 or IE 8 you will be upgraded to IE 9 without option, and if you are running IE 6 you will be upgraded to IE 8, which will finally make the process a whole lot easier than it has been in the past. IE 9 will make the internet pages you viewed on previous versions look way better, so this is exciting times for websites and their designers alike as their sites will be viewed in the way they were always meant to. There are some limitations, for example if you run the Windows XP operating system you will not be eligible for the upgrade to IE 9 as Windows decided not to run their new browser on a nearly decade old operating system. Microsoft say they’re doing this to maintain the upmost security for their browsers, but don’t worry if you prefer the version your running now, you can block the forced update but this isn’t exactly easy, so for more info head over to the Microsoft support site. Users of Internet Explorer should be excited, as they are finally being rewarded with a browser which is sure to compete with the big-wigs like Chrome and Firefox and they might finally be top of the tree once again

PC v Mac

It’s a debate that’s been going on for over quarter of a century now. I’m a hardcore PC user, but I did have to use a Mac Pro for 10 months at work. I whinged for a while , especially the different shortcut keys, that threw me for a while, especially in Photoshop. I got used to it and it looked prettier, shiny shiny, but had trouble connecting to the network every morning. Trying to download software was a nightmare if it wasn’t Mac compatible. It had all the bells and whistles, and all the interfaces were pretty. Now I’m back on the PC, I really don’t miss the Mac.

I would say for the same processor, ram, speed etc nowadays they’re pretty much on an even par. Sure you can buy cheaper PC’s that do the job fine, but you don’t get the bells and whistles or the metal case, not to forget the irritating Mac mouse that has a mind of it’s own and the batteries only last 2 minutes before you have to change them again. But in this economic climate, people aren’t so worried about the pretty stuff and don’t mind a bit of plastic as long as it does the job it’s meant to do.

In my industry, graphic designers tend to go for the Mac while the devs go for the PC. Our office actually has a couple of devs who swear blind by the Mac, while me, designer/developer, wouldn’t want to work with anything less than a PC.

JDI Soccer

For the second game in succession the ravens were a player down at kick off due unforeseen circumstances, but were again boosted by the appearance of experienced Barrie Manchip in midfield.

The snakes made early inroads and tested Mark Kennard in goal on numerous occasions in the opening 10 minutes but to no avail. It was in fact the Ravens who made the breakthrough with good work on the break which led to Dan Richards smashing home the opening goal of the evening.

That lead was short lived and the Snakes hit back within a matter of minutes capitalizing on some poor defending to equalize through Shane Caruthers. The game was to-ing and fro-ing in the early exchanges but it was the Snakes who took the lead with good work from the debutant Luke Maxmate, finishing off a nice move.

Again the snakes replied, Ben Rolison robbing Caruthers on the halfway line, playing a one two with Michael Quinn before clinically finishing in the bottom corner.

With the Ravens working tirelessly trying to make up for the player disadvantage they were yet again caught on the break this time it was the ever consistent Carl Topliss finishing from close range.

Further goals from Ian Leighfield and Luke Maxmate saw the Snakes really take advantage of the extra man as the Ravens started to tire.

The Score at half time was 7-4 to the Snakes. With the Ravens visibly exhausted from the first half’s exploits the sprightly Snakes were clearly confident of taking all three points.

The second half started as the first half ended with the Snakes taking the game by the scruff of the neck and adding more goals through Ben Blabber, Carl Topliss and Luke Maxmate. Barry Manchip added one in reply but it was never going to be enough to encourage a Raven revival. Despite being a man down Michael Quinn worked tirelessly up front holding up the ball superbly all night, really standing out along with the tireless Mark Kennard who covered every blade of artificial grass!

The Snakes added a few more strikes before the evening was out and they took the game 14-7, really capitalising on the extra man to run out clear winners.

Credit must go to the Ravens who worked their socks off to make it a contest but in the end it wasn’t quite enough to take victory away from the deserved Snakes.

Final Score
Snakes 14-7 Ravens

Man of Match
Michael Quinn (Ravens)

www.HappyBirthday.com

On August 6, 1991- (20 Years Ago) Tim Berners-Lee created a summary of a project for organizing information on a computer network using a “web”
of hyperlinks: Calling it the “WorldWideWeb,” or W3. At the same time, the W3 made its debut as a publicly available service on the Internet. It may be a little late
(3 days) but from the team here at Intellichat and ALL of our clients around the Globe would like to give a big thank you to Mr Tim Berners-Lee!

Thanks to him, the world has revolutionized in a remarkably short period of time, going from clunky old modems to smartphones, web-based technology has come a long, long way.

So the question is, whats the web going to be like in the next 20 years???

Technology is the new smoking

We’ve all been there; You’re at an outing or a dinner table with friends but itching to check your email or Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or Google+ or Yammer or whatever digital hit of serotonin you prefer. Have you ever “gone to the bathroom” in order to check email or come up with a socially appropriate excuse to pull out your smartphone just so you can check your @ replies on Twitter?
Remember when the critical mass of smokers used to leave the table or meeting in groups to go indulge their habit? I straight up open my laptop at bars and parties, and then feel more guilty about that than drinking.
A new British study released today backs up what we otherwise know intuitively, that Internet usage is increasingly becoming an addiction. Out of 1000 people surveyed after being cut off from the Internet for 24 hours, 53% reported feeling “upset” about being deprived of online access and 40% said that they felt lonely after not being able to connect to the Internet. Participants described the digital detox akin to quitting drinking or smoking and one even said it was like having his hand chopped off (!).
This British survey comes after a University of Maryland study in April that came to pretty much the same conclusion — With one student saying that she was “itching like a crackhead” after abstaining from any form of media for 24 hours. Geez.
Add this insight to the yet un-proven concerns that smartphone usage leads to Cancer and the smoking analogy becomes more and more apt (see image left). But for the moment Googling the name of a movie you can’t remember is hands down a lot healthier than smoking an actual cigarette, at least physically. For the moment.

Google +

Its finally here! Google has released its much anticipated Google+, The company’s top secret social layer that turns the whole of the search engine into one giant social network!
Google+ is the culmination of a year-long project led by Vic Gundotra, Google’s senior vice president of social. The project, which has been delayed several times, shows Googles Answer to the networking leader that is Facebook
The search giant’s new social project will be omnipresent on its products, thanks to a complete redesign of the navigation bar. The familiar gray strip at the top of every Google page will turn black, and come with several new options for accessing your Google+ profile, viewing notifications and instantly sharing content. The notification system is similar to how Facebook handles notifications, complete with a red number that increases with each additional notice.
At its core, Google+ is a social network. The first thing users are introduced to is the Stream. It’s much like the Facebook News Feed, allowing users to share photos, videos, links or their location with friends.
